Growing Herbs in Containers

By AMM | Mar 11, 2010

It’s easy to grow one herb plant in one pot. You can stretch your imagination and try multiple herbs in the same pot. This adds more interest to the containers, such as pops of color and texture.

If you do want to get started with container gardening, make sure that you’re selecting herb plants that have similar water, dirt and lighting needs as well as similar purposes.

Try these herbs that will do well in your containers:

  • Sage: There are so many varieties of sage that you could cultivate only sage in your garden and still have an abundant array of colors, textures and sizes. Sage grows well from seeds, which can give you a jump on the growing season if you start early inside. It likes well-drained sod and lots of direct sun. If you are growing sage for the foliage, you’ll want to cut off any buds that appear on the plant, which will force the plant to concentrate on growing more leaves rather than buds.
  • Scented geraniums: Just like sage, there are a lot of varieties of scented geraniums to select from. I hope you enjoy scented geraniums as much as I do. Although they look very like floral (non-herbal) variety, these also grow well in containers that you can purchase at any nursery, home improvement or discount store. Put your herbs in a container that has good drainage and put it in a spot that will give your scented geranium a lot of sunlight. Scented geranium stems and leaves will be nice in your cakes and teas. The petals are beautiful in pressings.
  • Cardamom: Cardamom is a nice herb for you if bad breath is an issue for you. This large houseplant-like plant will get big in the summer and will need to be brought indoors during winter to thrive, so use a big pot. Not only will the seeds add a flavor of India to your rice and chicken meals, you can also use it in soups and stews. In addition to taking care of your bad breath, cardamom can assist with your flatulence (not that you have flatulence) or least make your clothes smell nice.
  • Lemon verbena: This is one of those essential herbs to have in your garden because you can use it in so many ways. Do not even think about beginning with seeds. I recommend that you pick up your lemon verbena and get it established in a container with a wide rim that will support its stem growth. This herb likes full sun and well-drained earth. Check out your leaves for signs of drought because the leaves are the usable part of the plant.

Some other herbs that I’d recommend for you to start with in your pot combinations are: thyme, mints, lavender, goldenrod, fennel and carrot.

Good luck with your herb gardening. Be sure to let me know how your plant garden grows.
